NOTICE AND UPDATE ON FORMER PROUD BOY AND KNOWN WHITE SUPREMACIST COLLABORATOR WILTON JORDAN

Wilton Jordan was seen May 3rd, 2022 in downtown Asheville attending a leftist organized event in support of abortion access. Jordan attempted to blend in and participate in the march associated with this event. Unfortunately, he was nearly successful. Many in attendance were either unaware of or unconcerned with his dangerous, fascist affiliated background. Due to his recent attempts to access leftist spaces and his past antagonism towards anti-racist and anti-fascist organizers, we think people should be aware of his actions in order to make informed decisions in regards to sharing space.

Starting in late 2016/ early 2017, Wilton Jordan was an active and organizing member of the Proud Boys. Importantly, he was the founding member of the local ‘NC PB Mountain Chapter’, which hosted it’s first official rally in the spring/summer of 2017. During his time with the far-right, white supremacist, misogynist, and transphobic group the Proud Boys, Jordan provided information about locals he believed to be affiliated with leftist movements to fellow white supremacists. He was thus credited among his peers as being a major contributor to the far right’s doxxing campaign of Asheville locals. This campaign targeted activists and anyone loosely associated with them. The campaign brutally targeted trans and queer community members, with the use of dead names, rampant transphobia and other forms of verbal violence. Jordan’s actions have left members of our community vulnerable to continued threat since their information is now available online and cannot be removed. Hate mail, home visits, and the targeting of family members are just a few examples of the repercussions of his actions.

IN ADDITION to his reckless dissemination of personal information of locals, Jordan has a history of sexual harassment and predatory behavior. In 2015, he was overheard by local bar staff bragging about drugging and sexually assaulting women. And in 2021 he was forcibly removed from a local venue for behaving aggressively towards underage women. These behaviors and histories are noted among the community members who witnessed them, and have been corroborated by members of this coalition in conversations with witnesses to these cited events, along with other examples of predatory behavior not listed here.

Jordan has never addressed the sexual violence accusations made against him (accusations that have now circulated for years). This absence of transparency and accountability demonstrates a clear disregard for his actions on a basic level. Consistent with this insincerity, what Jordan has put forth regarding his affiliation with the Proud Boys is rife with inconsistencies. Jordan claims to have been out of the Proud Boys for six years. But the timeline of Jordan’s activities doesn’t align with this claim. Jordan was seen trying to enter a local bar with other Proud Boys in July of 2018 and only publicly renounced his membership on social media in 2019. Alongside these reliable indicators for his affiliation, it is important to highlight that the Proud Boys weren’t actually created until 2016, which as of this writing is 6 years ago.

These factual discrepancies, his hollow apology, and the sheer arrogance of attending a leftist event after the damage and harm he has caused affirms his position as a bad actor and a high threat to our community.

We extend this transparent account of his behavior since Jordan now claims he wants a second chance and has offered an apology. While this is a step in the right direction, an apology alone cannot repair the damage done, the trust that was broken, or the lives severely impacted. Even if he wanted to revoke the irreparable harm he has caused our friends, family, and community members he hasn’t (and can’t) remove the personal information still plastered across white supremacist databases. The people he directly harmed have confirmed that they will never feel safe or comfortable in his presence.

One is not allowed to simply turn around and assume consensual participation in the same community they deeply betrayed. Jordan cannot simply decide to “join in” on an action organized around principled human rights alongside those whose lives have been so negatively impacted by conscious decisions he made. While possibilities for addressing change and accountability for formerly affiliated fascists who “flip” may exist, Jordan’s unreliable accounts of recent history accompanied by his unwelcome presence at the May 3rd rally in support of abortion access is a clear indication of his inauthentic trajectory. Jordan is, among other things, an informant for white supremacists. We have no indication that Jordan’s current attempts to enter leftist spaces are anything but another ploy to gather information for the purpose of doxxing. We will not make room for Wilton Jordan and do not support his presence in our communal spaces.
